Printers
The institute has a number of network printers available, which can be controlled through the central CUPS print server lxtssp1. There are also local printers, but they are often assigned to a computer and only accessible via these computers.
CUPS offers a (local) webinterface, with which you can view the installed printers. Some print jobs can also be deleted through this web interface. You are then forwarded/linked to a respective encrypted page (https), where you must authenticate yourself using your accout name and password.
There is a small program (shell script) available, which lists the status of the printer queues. It's named lpq-all (The complete pathway is /usr/local/bin/lpq-all). The status is refreshed in a (currently) 30 second cycle with the the "-loop" option. The readout only happens once without this option.
Tips for Printer Problems
It is possible that the CUPS freezes, so that no other print jobs can be processed. Generally, this means the printer server lost the connection to the printre and is waiting for activation from it. A script was installed, which enables or triggers the printer queue every thirty minutes. If a printer does not react for longer than 30 minutes, the system administrator must step in.
Furthermore, all general print queues were installed once again with the prefix "z" on a second print server, lxtssp1. This means that if lpthp2 is not responding, the same printer can be addressed under the name zlpthp2.
Using a Printer from a Laptop
The public printers can only be used via the print queues the man CUPS print server lxtssp1 (IP 134.61.10.8) (and lxtssp2 (IP 134.61.10.6) as a spare machine with the z-queus described above).
If the systems do not independently find the CUPS servers, the following (printer) connection should be entered for Linux and Max OSx for the expression on lpthp1
ipp://lxtssp1.physik.rwth-aachen.de:631/printers/lpthp1
for Windows (under network printer)
http://xtssp1.physik.rwth-aachen.de:631/printers/lpthp1
and, if necessary, the appropriate driver selected. If you want to select a differnt printer, replace t lpthp1 with the name of the respective queue.
The printer lpthp4c is operated via the print server lxtspr3 (134.61.10.9).
Recent versions of Mac OS X require to enter the information on the printer queue seperated into protocol (ipp), server (lxtssp1.physik.rwth-aachen.de, 134.61.10.8) and queue (printers/lpthp1)!
Drivers for the printers from Triumph-Adler can be downloaded from https://www.triumph-adler.de/ta-de-de/support/downloads .
The following list provides an overview of the printers and links to the CUPS status page of the printers, where possible. That page also provides additional information about the printer and current print jobs:
