This page lists the projects in which the CMT is currently involved, in alphabetical order. Beyond that, the project house is involved in the preparation and planning of numerous future projects.
The IRES program Training Next Generation US Researchers in Advanced Magnetic Resonance at the Chemistry-Industry Interfaces enables doctoral students from UCSB, UCB and UCLA in California to conduct research as IRES fellows at RWTH Aachen University. The program is coordinated by the University of California in Santa Barbara.
The CMT assists in the preparation of the visits and accompanies the cohorts during their stay in Aachen. A varied program of workshops, excursions and cultural activities is organized by us.
The Bioeconomy Science Center, for short BioSC, promotes research on food and feed, on the chemical use of biomass, on the energetic use of biomass, as well as on bio-based materials. The newly developed methods are confirmed while the economic and ecological implications are taken into account – in parallel to the ongoing research. The Science Center is a first answer to the challenge of a future knowledge-based bioeconomy.
The NRW strategy project BioSC is funded by the NRW state government. Several financial instruments have been installed to promote research on the above topics between partners and disciplines. Partners in BioSC are RWTH Aachen University, HHU Düsseldorf, University of Bonn and Forschungszentrum Jülich.
The CMT serves as the central communication office at the RWTH between the participating departments and administrative units as well as the project sponsor. The cumulated calls for funds and proofs of usage are issued here. The administration of this complex project is centralized at CMT.
A key point for cost- and energy-efficient bioprocesses is the processing of the aqueous fermentation media. The aim of the BioSorp project is to evaluate and establish adsorption as an alternative to current product separation techniques in biorefinery processes. Chairs of Chemistry and process engineering from RWTH Aachen University and TU Darmstadt work together on this topic.
The CMT was centrally involved in submitting the application to the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Since the approval in October 2018, we are administratively supporting the project at RWTH Aachen University.
Carbon2Chem® is a large-scale joint project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The project involves partners from the chemical, energy and steel industries from all over Germany who are creating a completely new collaboration between the most important national industries.
The aim of the project is the utilization of emissions from steel production as raw materials for the chemical industry. For this purpose, surplus energy from renewable sources shall be used. This can make a significant contribution to climate protection and the energy transition.
The CMT is responsible for the administrative support of two sub-projects of Carbon2Chem®.
The focus of the EU Horizon 2020 SPIRE project Carbon4Pur is the conversion of CO2/CO-containing flue gas streams of the energy-intensive industry into higher-value intermediates for market-oriented consumer goods. Thus, a significant contribution can be made to the defossilation of the processing industry and to the reduction of greenhouse gases.
The CMT was involved in preparing the application for the project and serves as the central contact point on the part of RWTH Aachen University.
The EU HORIZON 2020 BBI PPP project GreenSolRes aims at a demonstration of the competitiveness of the levulinic acid value chain in terms of cost, environmental impact and technical performance. It targets to optimize the process design of all process components to allow for commercialization of the process.
The CMT was involved in the application of the project. The central administration of reports etc. of the RWTH is in the hands of our project house.
Power-to-X (P2X) is one of the large-scale Kopernikus projects of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, in which numerous partners from all over Germany are investigating the future of the energy transition. On September 1st, 2019, the second project phase of P2X has started.
Different ways of restoring electricity from renewables are the subject of P2X research. The X in Power-to-X can be liquids – e.g. fuels –, gases or chemicals, i.e. valuables. These different paths will be evaluated in order to find the most suitable technology for the future or the best combination.
The CMT was centrally involved in the preparation of the RWTH parts of the proposal. Our project house is responsible for the coordination of the project on the part of RWTH Aachen University.
The acronym NAMOSYN stands for sustainable mobility through synthetic fuels. NAMOSYN's goal is to quickly establish the foundations for the introduction of synthetic fuels that can be sustainably produced under ecological, economic and social criteria. For this purpose, extensive research and development work will be carried out for different fuel alternatives for different applications – with a focus on road vehicles, off-road vehicles and mobile work machines.
The project house CMT was instrumental in the preparation and submission of applications.
Partners at the RWTH are Professor Regina Palkovits, Professor Jürgen Klankermayer, Professor Andreas Jupke, Professor Alexander Mitsos and Professor André Bardow. The project work started on April 1st, 2019.
North Rhine-Westphalia is a country with a leading international research community and a world-class chemical industry. Even in the important chemical industry, the path from the idea to the product is still long and difficult, also due to the lack of space for start-up projects. The European Union has identified these obstacles as a core problem, as well: in the European Union, the Technology Readiness Level, short TRL, describes the path of an idea to a product on the market. The transition from TRL 4 to 7 is seen as a bottleneck. It is called the Valley of Death.
The purpose of the QuinCAT concept is to overcome this valley by bridging the gap between university and industry through a business start-up and incubation space designed for chemical researchers with a desire to set up a business. The construction project QuinCAT will create state-of-the-art laboratory and office space in order to bring scientific knowledge, concepts and projects in the field of Green Chemistry to market maturity.
The EFRE project QuinCAT is located at the CMT.
SusChemSys 2.0 is an interdisciplinary network between chemistry and process engineering for doctoral students from various universities and research institutions in NRW. The program enables overarching activities such as joint meetings, industry excursions and soft skill workshops. In particular, networking - with doctoral students from other disciplines and institutions as well as professors and industry representatives - enriches the education of doctoral candidates.
SusChemSys 2.0 is coordinated by the project house CMT.
SINCHEM Sustainable Industrial Chemistry is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate Program that promotes doctoral students of five cohorts. Each of the fellows performs his/her research at two universities as well as another partner institution or a partner company. After the three year´s fellowship, a fellow is jointly awarded a doctorate by the two supervising universities. The project topics focus on the development of innovative catalysts and catalytic processes, novel green solvents, renewable energies and raw materials as well as microreactors and membranes.
The project house CMT is the central interface between the participating chairs, the central university administration and the project partners. It is responsible for financial reporting and communication with the coordinator. In addition, we take care of close guidance of the fellows who have RWTH Aachen University as the HOME or HOST university.
